As the NBA trade deadline approaches, the Miami Heat will visit the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night, with several key players absent from the lineup.
The Heat will be without suspended star Jimmy Butler, who has become a major talking point as Thursday’s trade deadline nears. Miami has been linked to several Western Conference teams as potential trade partners for the disgruntled forward.
The 76ers, on the other hand, will likely be missing Paul George (finger injury) once again, and Joel Embiid will sit out as well.
Reports suggest that George, in the first year of his four-year, $212 million deal, is attracting interest from around the league. With Philadelphia struggling to meet expectations this season, the team could look to make moves before the deadline.
On Tuesday, the Sixers made a trade, acquiring sharpshooter Quentin Grimes from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for the injury-prone Caleb Martin.
“I know him a little bit,” Sixers coach Nick Nurse said of Grimes. “I’ve got some guys who played for me in Houston, so I did some intel when I heard we got him. He’s been shooting the ball well, and we’ll see where he fits in, but I think he’s a good addition.”
Joel Embiid, however, is not going anywhere. After missing 15 games, he returned on Tuesday, leading the Sixers to a 118-116 victory over the Mavericks with a triple-double performance—29 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in 36 minutes. Nurse confirmed that Embiid would rest for Wednesday’s game, the second half of a back-to-back set.
“As long as we stay healthy, I feel like we still have the potential to accomplish our goal,” Embiid said optimistically after his return. “It’s tough, the position we’re in, but I’ve always believed we can win no matter what. We just need to get healthy and stay healthy.”
Philadelphia has won five of its last seven games, while Miami is aiming to avoid its third loss in four games.
The Heat fell to the Chicago Bulls 133-124 on Tuesday, as Chicago shot nearly 53% from the field, including 19 of 41 from three-point range.
Miami was led by Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, who each scored 23 points, while rookie Kel’el Ware added 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Although the Heat are accustomed to playing without Butler, the organization is still hoping to resolve the situation with the veteran forward in some way.
“At this point, you understand it’s a business, and you don’t forget that at any point,” Adebayo said.
For the players on the court, coach Erik Spoelstra is focused on improving the defense. Allowing 133 points to a mediocre offensive team won’t cut it.
“We were never able to really contain the ball, no matter what scheme we were in,” Spoelstra said. “Our defense didn’t travel tonight, and we paid the price.”
This will be the second of four meetings between the Heat and 76ers this season. In November, Miami won 106-89 at home, with Butler contributing 30 points and 10 rebounds.
