Cade Cunningham proved his All-Star worth with a stellar 40-point performance, and he’ll look to build on that momentum when the Detroit Pistons host the Chicago Bulls on Sunday afternoon.
His explosive effort propelled the Pistons to a 117-102 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday, just one day after being named an All-Star reserve by the conference’s coaches.
“I think he has a great understanding of the moment,” Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said Friday. “To be voted as an All-Star last night and then deliver this kind of performance—point proven. He not only recognizes the significance but has the ability to rise to the occasion, and that’s what stands out. Some players are aware of the moment, but executing at this level is truly impressive.”
Detroit snapped a three-game skid in the first of six straight home games. After winning only 14 games last season, the Pistons posted a 10-6 record in January.
“It’s exactly what we wanted,” Cunningham said. “We set out to dominate January, and while we let a few games slip, it was a great month in terms of focus and execution. It feels good. Now, it’s on to February.”
While Cunningham has led the way, center Jalen Duren has been a consistent force inside. He has recorded double-doubles in seven of his last eight outings, including a 16-point, 13-rebound showing against Dallas.
“He’s a well-rounded player, and over the past month, he’s found a rhythm and made a real impact,” Bickerstaff said.
Meanwhile, the Bulls, who had no All-Star selections, defeated Toronto 122-106 on Friday. Chicago has embraced a smaller lineup featuring four guards, a strategy that paid off against the rebuilding Raptors. The Bulls shot 50.6 percent from the field and racked up 34 assists on 45 made shots.
Leading scorer Zach LaVine missed the game for the birth of his child. Both LaVine and center Nikola Vucevic could be on the move ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline. Vucevic contributed 21 points and 12 rebounds in the win over Toronto.
“I think we did a better job getting him involved than in previous games,” Bulls coach Billy Donovan said. “He had everything working. With Zach out, we need him to step up even more.”
Rookie Matas Buzelis delivered his second consecutive 12-point game, adding seven rebounds and three blocks.
“Defensively, he did some spectacular things,” Donovan said. “He was tough to shoot over. If he can maintain positioning and not take himself out of plays, he’ll provide even more rim protection.”
Chicago has dominated recent matchups with Detroit, winning 18 of the last 20 meetings. In their previous clash on Nov. 18, Vucevic led the Bulls to a 122-112 road victory with 29 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks.
